She was nominated for two Academy Awards in the category Best Costume Design for the films The Europeans (1979) and A Passage to India (1985). Moorcroft is also known for her work as costume designer on the films The Killing Fields (1984) and The Dressmaker (1988) amongst others.

Education and Early Career

[edit]

Moorcroft studied dress design at Manchester College of Art in the early Fifties[1] and started working at the BBC in 1964.[2]

Career

[edit]

Moorcroft was costume designer for the 1977 film The Prince and the Pauper (American title Crossed Swords), working with wardrobe mistresses Dorothy Edwards and Betty Adamson and the London-based costumers Berman's, now under Angel's Costumes. She created lavish costumes, also described as ‘big, flashy and pretty’[1] and 'the most ornate and opulent ever seen on any movie set'.[3] Moorcroft worked with a limited budget, but is quoted as saying, "[...] the real talent comes in creating a first-rate wardrobe within the framework of your financial limits".[3] Moorcroft also re-used costumes from the films A Man for All Seasons and Anne of the Thousand Days to dress characters.
