"It's OK I'm OK" (stylized in sentence case) is a song by Canadian singer Tate McRae. It was released as a single on September 12, 2024, through RCA Records. The pop, R&B and electronic track was written by McRae, alongside Ryan Tedder, Savan Kotecha, and Ilya, with production by the latter.

Background and release

After releasing her second studio album, Think Later, in December 2023, Tate McRae embarked on its supporting concert tour.[1][2] The album produced "Greedy" (2023), which was one of her highest-charting singles.[3] In March 2024, McRae revealed that she had returned to the studio when asked about the possibility of new music releases: "I think it's just figuring out what I want, while I'm preparing for tour. Honestly, I'm just getting stories out and writing and seeing what first comes to mind right now, especially since it's so quickly after my album just dropped. I'm feeling out the water and seeing what it feels like to get back in again."[4]

McRae wrote the song "It's OK I'm OK" with Ryan Tedder, Savan Kotecha, and its producer, Ilya Salmanzadeh.[5] On August 22, 2024, during her performance at Madison Square Garden, McRae premiered the new song as an encore on the tour. It included the lyrics "It's OK. I'm OK. I don't really gotta say. It's OK. You can have him anyway." According to Variety's Lexi Carson, "elements of [it] evoked songs from Britney Spears' 2000 album Oops !…I Did It Again".[6][7][8] McRae posted a picture of herself with the song title written on sand in September 2024, stating that "yall aren't readyyy" for it. Her prior collaborator Tedder liked the post.[9][10] RCA Records released the song as a single on September 12, 2024.[11][12]

Writing and composition

The song is about a woman talking about her ex-boyfriend. The narrator is glad that she is no longer in a relationship with her ex, and warns his new girlfriend about him. [13] The song is a moody pop and electronic track with heavy elements of R&B.[14][12]

Music video

The music video for the song was directed by Hannah Lux Davis.[15] Speaking about inspirations behind the video, McRae said: "So many pop videos. Old Britney, old Christina. It's very campy, I would say. Sean [Bankhead] absolutely devoured the choreo."[16][17] The music video takes place in New York City, and has McRae walk the streets in several outfits. At one point, she gets arrested while walking around in the nude.[18][19]
