History
[edit]In 1954, a group of industrial, financial and agricultural leaders establishes the Association for Applied Solar Energy (AFASE) as a non-profit organisation in Phoenix, Arizona. This association evolved into the "Solar Energy Society" by the early 1960s and by 1971, the society achieved the name it has today, "International Solar Energy Society".

The first ever ISES conference was a two day conference on Solar Energy - The Scientific Basis in Tuscon, Arizona during which 96 papers were presented. This was followed by the World Symposium on Applied Solar Energy took place in November 1955 and attracted over 900 registrants. The Solar Engineering Exhibition, held in conjunction with the Symposium, was visited by nearly 30,000 people. On display were examples of solar devices, which included many working models.
ISES Solar World Congress
[edit]In 1970, ISES started its bi-annual congress series, the ISES Solar World Congress. The initial Solar World Congress took place in Melbourne, Australia as the ISES headquarters had relocated to Melbourne.
In 2020, ISES celebrated this first ever ISES Solar World Congress with a dedicated event called SWC50 - The Century of Solar. Due to the Corona pandemic, the event which was initially planned to take place in Melbourne too, had to be moved online.
