Industrial percussion
Industrial percussion can be described as industrial music being composed and played using a variety of percussion instruments and (mostly self-made) percussion installations, metal objects, metal scrap material, metal plates and tubes, parts from machines, sometimes in combination with conventional drums and wind instruments such as trumpet and didgeridoo.
Test Department was one of the first bands that used this kind of material to generate their sound in a consistent way. The German band Einstürzende Neubauten also uses self-made percussion instruments surrounded by conventional "rock" instruments like guitars, synthesizers and drums.
In 1989 Frank Gorissen founded the Belgian industrial percussion band Militia which is one of the leading bands in this style at the moment. Their sound can be described as machine-like and strong percussion rhythms, supported by electronic music made using tape loops, samples and sequencer in the background.
