I Made Agus Mahayastra (born 2 June 1971) is an Indonesian politician who served as the 11th Regent of Gianyar Regency from 2018 to 2023.

Early life and education

Mahayastra was born on 2 June 1971 in Gianyar Regency, Bali, to I Wayan Sutama, a junior school teacher, and Ni Made Sudani, a coffee seller.[1][2] He has three siblings.[2] Mahayastra completed his primary education at SD Negeri Payangan from 1979 to 1985 and his middle school education at SMP Negeri 1 Payangan.[1][2] He graduated from SMA Negeri 1 Gianyar in 1991 and attended Udayana University, where he majored in tourism and graduated in 1996.[1][2] Mahayastra later earned a master's degree from Ngurah Rai University, studying from 2010 to 2012.[1][2]

Mahayastra is married to Ida Ayu Ketut Surya Adnyani and has three children.[1][2]

Political career

Mahayastra began his career as an election witness in 1992.[1][2] He subsequently served as Chairman of the Branch Leadership Council of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) in Gianyar Regency, and as Chairman of the PDIP Branch Leadership in Payangan district from 1994 to 2000.[1][2] In the same year, he continued as Chairman of the Branch Leadership Council of PDIP in Gianyar Regency until 2005.[1][2] Mahayastra also served as Chairman of the House of Representatives in Gianyar Regency in 2004 and 2013.[1][2] From 2005 to 2010, he was Deputy Chairman of the PDIP Regional Representative Council in Bali.[1][2] He then served as Deputy Regent alongside Regent AAG Agung Bharata from 2013 to 2018.[1][2] On 20 September 2018, Mahayastra was appointed Regent of Gianyar Regency, a position he held until 2023.[1][2]
