"Holy, Holy" is the debut solo single by English musician Geordie Greep, released on 20 August 2024 on Rough Trade Records as the lead single to his debut album, The New Sound. The single was released only 10 days after Greep announced Black Midi was "indefinitely over"[1] to critical acclaim from publications like Pitchfork, who ranked it as the 11th best song of 2024 months later.[2]

Composition and content

[edit]

"Holy, Holy" is a progressive rock song described by KXSC Radio as "[blending] post-punk, prog, funk, and latin jazz fusion"[3] The track, like many in The New Sound, was inspired by men Greep met while drinking at clubs and the stories they would tell him, sang from the point of view of a cartoonishly misogynist character. The song's chorus describes the character being known by "jihadis", which Greep said was inspired by how Andrew Tate bragged about ISIS watching his videos.[4] Writing for Pitchfork, Sam Goldner compared the song to Steely Dan and Pere Ubu.[5]

Music video

[edit]

The music video for "Holy, Holy" was released alongside the song on August 20. Directed by Ethan & Tom, it presents Greep dancing and drinking cocktails at a bowling alley. The University of Nottingham's The Mic analyzed the video's editing, and noted it as purposefully edited to show Greep scoring perfect strikes every time in order to reiterate the song's ironic nature.[6]
