Aims

This Tutorial is designed to cover the current gaps for new editors. There are user-friendly step-by-step tutorials for the markup language (e.g. WP:tutorial and WP:training), but the only thing available for VisualEditor is the full User Guide which is a bit much to digest all at once and covers a mix of basic and advanced features. It uses the {{intro to}} template that should allow synchronisation between the formatting of tutorials. I plan to add similar introductions to references and tables (maybe templates, page settings and categories etc). T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 10:50, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you do much for this! -Rdicerb (WMF) (talk) 22:35, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing

The referencing version of this tutorial is now up - Help:Introduction to referencing (VE). Next priority is probably images. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 09:17, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Images

The images page is now done too - Help:Introduction to images (VE). The pages are all linked together by Help:intro to and {{intro to box}}. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 01:59, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bad title

Need to make the title more clear if you want more then 10 hits a day. (VE) means noting to new editors ...plus does not show up in a search should be called Help:Introduction to VisualEditor. -- Moxy (talk) 17:20, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point that the title isn't going to match people's searches. I suspect that most people come to the initial tutorial-type pages via links from other pages rather than e.g. searching "getting started" or "plain and simple". Consequently the linking work you've done around the help pages has been great! Having said that, there's no harm in having a clearer name. My suggestion would be "Help:Introduction to editing with VisualEditor", and standardising the others to fit:
  • Help:introduction_to_*_(VE) → Help:introduction_to_*_with_VisualEditor
  • Help:introduction_to_*_(WM) → Help:introduction_to_*_with_WikiMarkup
Keeping the naming consistent like that should help people move back and forth between them more logically. What do you think? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 11:51, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

""I think that would be great-- Moxy (talk) 16:56, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done (for this page at least). Will try to update the other pages to the same name format over the next few days. If you could help out with fixing any double-redirects, that'd be really helpful! T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 10:55, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I linked this at de.wp...

And de:Hilfe:Einführung in den VisualEditor/1 happened. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 08:37, 9 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Created new page/draft and can't get back in to edit it?

I would like to edit a section of a page / draft I created the other day. I can pull up the edits I'd made on the page I created but see no place to edit any of it? I can't find the page. Also, since it's my first one...how long will it take to appear on wikipedia? Thanks! Cavenezia (talk) 04:17, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Cavenezia: I believe you're talking about this page: Draft:S.K._Bain,_Investigative_Researcher_and_Author. I've added a button to the top that will allow you to submit it for review. The process can take anywhere from 1-60 days depending on the backlog of other submitted drafts, so I'm afaid you may have to be patient. My advice is to get it to as high a standard as possible before submission. In particulr, it's important to have numerous independent 'third party' supporting references. Good luck. Thanks i will do my best for Wikipedia. ..if i find it possible to use. .. Lastprince19 (talk) 23:44, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The instructions to use the Visual Editor are the same as the instructions to use the old editor

The visual editor came up when I first went to visit a page, but I can't get it back. I used to program (what we called it then) in high school, and have only recently done a little auto it. I am a physician. I heard on the radio that some people in Wikipedia did not want the Visual Editor to become popular, in spite of decreasing contributor numbers. Well, I can see where I'm not wanted. No more edits, no more contributions from me. I will continue enjoy consuming the work of others though... Have a nice life all of you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrew Nielsen (talkcontribs) 06:59, 16 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there,

I noticed that when you click on the film Brotherhood's wikipedia page and try to click on the film Nicolo Donato's name/ link which should lead to his wikipedia page that nothing happens. Nicolo Donato has previously had a wikipedia page, as he is a very well known and respected director from Denmark. Please find the link below to the Brotherhood wikipedia page. Is it possible to fix Nicolo Donato's link, so that when one clicks on Nicolo's link that it takes him to his wikipedia page again like it used to do before?

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Brotherhood_(2009_film)

Many thanks!

Done, restored Nicolo Donato (film director) from redirect. @Juffie614: Next time, please make the edit request at the relevant talk page, or ask for assistance at the Teahouse.  Ganbaruby! (Say hi!) 04:17, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Missing end parentheses symbol.

While reading the section Links and Wikilinks for Introduction to editing with VisualEditor for the sentence "(To insert a URL as a supporting reference in an article, see the references tutorial!" I saw the ) symbol at the end was missing, this is something minor, but still should be changed. Gameking1happy (talk) 15:48, 23 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Gameking1happy: Well spotted! -- John of Reading (talk) 16:49, 23 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(Refers to Help:Introduction to editing with VisualEditor/3; the talkpage redirects here.) c:File:VisualEditor-link tool-search results.png, following directly after an exhortation to follow MOS:OVERLINK, displays selecting World as an appropriate wikilink (which it certainly isn't; World literature is available). c:File:VisualEditor-link tool-external link.png, immediately above guidance not to add external links except in the ==External links== subheading, shows an external link being added directly to body prose in contravention of WP:EL.

Can these be updated to reflect the guidance surrounding them, instead of showing counterexamples? Folly Mox (talk) 18:51, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Folly Mox, absolutely agreed! Feel free to be bold and take screenshots to use as replacements. (Be careful not to license all images within the screenshot, in addition to commons:Template:Wikimedia-screenshot.) Sdkbtalk 21:43, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
