Hasawi
Ḥasāwi (Arabic: حساوي) is an Arabic term that translates to 'related to al-Ḥasa/al-ʾIḥsāʾ'. It may refer to:
- Someone from al-Ḥasa (or al-ʾIḥsāʾ) region in modern-day Saudi Arabia.
- Historically and more generally, someone from al-Ḥasa and al-Qaṭīf region. This usage is still common in Kuwait and Bahrain especially in reference to people of Ḥasāwi origin.
- Hasawi, Jilīb li-Šyūkh, Kuwait: a quarter in Jilīb li-Šyūkh area in Farwaniya Governorate, Kuwait.
Linguistics
[edit]- The Hasawi dialect in Kuwait and Bahrain was prominent among Ḥasāwi immigrants. It is now endangered due to intermixing following the oil boom.
- Hasawi dialect [wd] might also be used in reference to all Gulf Arabic dialects spoken in the region of Al-Ḥasa and the wider Eastern Province in Saudi Arabia.
- Hasaitic: Ancient Semitic language found and named after Al-Ḥasa region.
