Han Ji-sung (Korean한지성; born September 14, 2000), known professionally as Han and J.One, is a South Korean rapper, singer and songwriter. He is a member of the South Korean boy band Stray Kids and its production team, 3Racha, both affiliated with JYP Entertainment.

A full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association since February 2023, making him the youngest K-pop idol to be awarded such membership. As of August 2024, Han has registered songwriting and production credits on 160 songs, including "Paradise" by Japanese girl group NiziU, "No Idea" by Show Lo, "Nevermind" by Yao Chen, and "Yolo-konde" by JO1. He has also received credits on collaborative tracks with artists including American rapper Lil Durk, Japanese rapper Sky-Hi, Korean-American rapper Tiger JK, and Japanese singer-songwriter, Lisa.

Early life and education

[edit]

Han was born on September 14, 2000, in Incheon, South Korea[1], though his family later moved to Mokpo.[2] The younger of two sons, Han attended elementary school in Korea until his family moved to Malaysia, where he attended Fairview International School for a short time before dropping out and receiving home-schooling.[3][1][4]

At fourteen, he returned to South Korea with the intention of auditioning to become a Korean idol, as well as passing all three levels of the Korean Qualification Exam [ko] as part of a promise to his parents that he would return to Malaysia to pursue further education if he was not successful at audition after twelve months.[1][4] Three months after he had arrived,[5][6] Han auditioned on a whim for JYP Entertainment with a friend, but was called back for a second audition and subsequently signed as a trainee with the agency.

After debut, together with bandmates Lee Know and Changbin, Han enrolled at Gukje Cyber University, studying performance and broadcast entertainment.[7]

Career

[edit]

2017–present: Pre-debut, forming 3RACHA, survival show, and Stray Kids

[edit]

Prior to becoming a trainee, Han had a broad enjoyment of music,[8] though having been inspired by artists including Epik High and Zico,[9] Han decided to focus on rapping. While a trainee at JYP Entertainment, Han also took classes at the Def Music Academy in Gangnam District.[10][11] After taking MIDI classes together while trainees[12], Han would co-found 3RACHA alongside Bang Chan and Changbin,[13] a rap-focused songwriting trio which would go on to be the foundational core of Stray Kids, in 2016;[14][15] together the three have produced the near-total majority of the group's output, building the band's reputation as self-produced by writing lyrics, composing, producing, directing, and arranging.[16][17][18][19][20]

Before any official debut, 3RACHA released their first mixtape, J:/2017/mixtape, on SoundCloud on 18 January 2017.[13][14] Their second mixtape, 3Days, was posted to SoundCloud on 16 August 2017, and included Han's first solo release under the alias J.One,[12][21] "I See". Their third – and, as of August 2024, final – mixtape, Horizon, was posted to SoundCloud on 21 December 2017. 3RACHA would go on to rework several of their pre-debut songs into Stray Kids B-sides.

In the latter half of 2017, Han participated in the Stray Kids survival show;[22] he received consistent praise from company founder and CCO Park Jin-young[23] and other guest judges, and was one of four contestants (alongside Bang Chan, Changbin, and Seungmin) never to be at risk of elimination. After his confirmation as part of the group's lineup, Han went on to make his official debut with Stray Kids on March 25, 2018, when the group released their EP, I Am Not.[24] 3RACHA made no further releases on SoundCloud until the release of the song "Carpe Diem" on 18 January 2020 to mark their third anniversary.[14]

In February 2023, alongside his fellow members of 3RACHA, Han was promoted from associate to full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA),[25][26][27][28][29][30] making him the youngest K-pop idol to be awarded such membership.[31][32][33][34] After bandmates Bang Chan and Changbin (first and second respectively), Han is the third-most KOMCA-accredited fourth-generation idol.[32][35]

In summer 2024, a year ahead of its expected expiration,[36] it was announced that together with his bandmates, Han had renewed his group contract with JYP Entertainment, extending Stray Kids' affiliation with the agency for an additional three years.[37][38]

Subunit and solo activities

[edit]

In 2019, Han appeared on episode 197 of King of Masked Singer, competing for the title of 99th Generation Mask King, using the disguise Imgeokjjeong.[5][6][39][40] Han was eliminated in the first round. In October 2022, he appeared on episode 32 of Lee Mujin Service[41] where he performed a jazz-inspired remix of Stray Kids' then-new release "Case 143", as well as songs by Twice,[42] YB, and Se So Neon.[43]

Individually, Han has participated in special performances for Korean music festivals, including a cover of SSAK3's "Play That Summer" (그 여름을 틀어줘) with Lia of Itzy and Juyeon of The Boyz at MBC Music Festival 2020,[44][45] and a cover of Kim Sung-jae's "As I Told You" (말하자면) with bandmates Hyunjin and Felix at KBS Song Festival 2022.[46]

As part of 3RACHA, Han has performed with N.Flying at 2019 KCON LA,[47] and, on a remix of their predebut track, "Runner's High", at 2019 KCON Thailand[48] with Soyeon of (G)I-DLE and Hongjoong of Ateez. 3RACHA have also given numerous performances whether as introduction, outro, or independent of wider Stray Kids sets at the MAMA Awards, including a special stage at MAMA 2022 with Tiger JK and Jung Jae-il.[49][50]

After a minor car accident meant the full Stray Kids lineup could not perform as originally intended,[51] Han made his first international festival appearance as part of 3RACHA at Global Citizen Festival 2023 in New York City.[52][18]

In February 2022, 3RACHA announced their first official guest single "Just Breathe", a collaboration with Japanese rapper SKY-HI.[53][54][55][56] In September 2022, 3RACHA composed the track "Heyday" for the fourth soundtrack compilation of Street Man Fighter.[57]

In April 2020, Stray Kids were invited to sing the theme for the first season of the anime adaptation of Tower of God, with 3RACHA writing and composing the opening theme, "Top", and Han writing and composing the ending theme, "Slump".[58] In July 2020, all members of 3RACHA received writing and composition credits on Stray Kids' second domestic television OST, "Hello Stranger".[59] In April 2024, as part of 3RACHA Han co-produced Stray Kids' first OST for a Japanese drama, "Why?" for Fuji TV's RE: Revenge – At the End of Desire.[60][61][62]. In July 2024, 3RACHA co-wrote and co-produced the Stray Kids song "Slash" for the Deadpool & Wolverine soundtrack[63][64][65][66] marking Han's first contribution to the soundtrack of a Hollywood cinematic release, and second major film OST after 3RACHA were approached to produce a theme song for Doraemon: Nobita's Sky Utopia.[67]

SKZ-Record/Player and solo music

[edit]

After debuting, Stray Kids began a YouTube-based non-album singles project, SKZ-Record/Player, where individual members could upload solo and/or subunit original songs, cover versions, or dance performances exploring their own artistic expression beyond the group's collective style.[21] As of August 2024, Han was the most prolific contributor to the project, with nine original solo songs (in release order: "Close";[68] "I Got It";[69][70] "Alien";[20][3][71] "Wish You Back";[20][72] "Happy" [stylised as HaPpY];[20][73] "Volcano";[74][75][76][77][78]; "Miserable (You & Me)";[79][80] "13";[81][82][83][84]; and "Maybe"[85][86]), three original subunit songs ("Zone", as part of 3RACHA[15]; "Want So Bad", a duet with bandmate Lee Know;[87][88] and "Respirator" (산소호흡기),[89] a duet with bandmate Seungmin[90][91][92]), one original duet with Bae of NMIXX ("1, 2, 3, 4, 5"[93][94][95]), and two cover versions (both with bandmate Seungmin and both of songs by DAY6[20][21][96]). He was also credited as the lyricist and co-composer of "Hold On",[97] recorded for the project by Seungmin.

Six of these, plus a further, previously unheard solo song, "Run", were released to digital platforms as part of Stray Kids' digital compilation album, SKZ-Replay, in December 2022[74]. As of July 2024, the remainder were yet to see wider release, though Respirator was performed in March 2024 on the final day of Stray Kids' fourth fanmeeting, SKZ Magic School.

Of Han's SKZ-Record/Player songs (including "Run"), by July 2024, twelve had entered the Genius Korea Daily Charts – a measurement of search interest in the lyrics of a song – split across four genres (rock, R&B, hip hop, and pop).[78][98][99] Five of these entries were debuts at number 1. Han ranked fourteenth in Genius Korea's 2023 Year-End Male Soloists ranking, and as of July 17, 2024, ranked ninth in Genius Korea's Male Soloists for the year to date based on 2024 releases.[100] As of February 2024, Han was the most-followed fourth generation male idol on the platform.[101]

As of August 2024, Han had several additional songs which had neither been released to SKZ-Record/Player nor to wider digital platforms, including "Scissor", performed at Unite ON: Hallyu Festival in 2020,[102] "Don't Say", performed during Stray Kids' 5-STAR Dome Tour in 2023,[103][104][104], the first time Han played guitar in concert, and "Hold My Hand",[105] performed in August 2024 as part of Stray Kids' DominATE tour in Seoul.

Presenting and guest judging

[edit]

Since 2020, Han has intermittently served as a special guest presenter of Show! Music Core, co-presenting 3 episodes (10 October 2020, 26 March 2022, 22 October 2022).

With 3RACHA, he has been a special guest performer on the finale of Loud on 4 September 2021,[106] special guest judge for the 'JYP Match' mission on Street Woman Fighter 2 in September 2023, and special guest judge for the final episodes of JYP Entertainment's survival show Nizi Project Season 2 in December 2023.[107][108][109][110]

Artistry

[edit]

Praised in media as a "musical chameleon",[9] "instinctual lyricist"[13], and "a hidden gem"[111] possessing "the charms of a rock star",[105] Han is commonly described as an all-rounder [21][31][32][35][41][67][3][112][113][114][115][116][117] with strong skills across rap and singing,[8][9][39][41][77][116][118][119], dancing,[120][121][122] songwriting and production,[8][31][39][3][112][119][123][124][125] and playing musical instruments,[105][115][126][127] as well as improvisation,[128][129] comedy,[112][114][123][130] and acting.[131] Consequently, the nickname/sobriquet "Ace of the fourth generation"[118][120][123][122][34] has been applied to Han.

Since debut, Han ranked consistently in Tumblr's K-Pop Stars of the Year, ranking 39 in 2018,[132] 19 in 2019,[133] 30 in 2020,[134] 20 in 2021,[135] and 16 in 2022.[136] Billboard ranked him sixth in their 2024 K-Pop Artist 100,[31] and Demi Phillips, writing for We Got This Covered, ranked him among the best male K-Pop singers of all time.[111] Additionally, as part of Stray Kids, Han has been noted as a rising star by Forbes Korea,[137] Gold House,[138] and Time.[139]

Throughout 2024, Han consistently ranked highly in Rankify's Idol Composer Trend Index, with data showing interest in his songs as distributed comparatively evenly across all surveyed age groups (teenagers to fifty-somethings).[140][141][142][143][144][145][146][147][148][149][150][151][152][153]

Songwriting and production

[edit]

Drawing inspiration from the visual arts, particularly film and anime,[9][68][154][155] as well as reality TV[82][84] and paintings,[156] Han is a prolific lyricist and songwriter[130] driven to explore diverse genres[13][124][157] and unique topline melodies.[13][21][3][119]. In addition to known unreleased songs such as the solo track "Scissor" and 3RACHA tracks "My People" and "Passion", Han has many compositions which have yet to be released, at one point indicating he had in the region of 40 unreleased songs he had since archived or set aside as he felt they were no longer representative of his abilities or interests as an artist.

In interviews, Han has noted that when he began songwriting it was "difficult to collect and organise [his] ideas" until he felt he had the experience to feel more confident,[13] and that he finds it difficult and unfulfilling to compose to trends,[8] so when finding himself uninspired, he no longer tries to write or listen to music as "when I clear my head and give my mind that time of rest, new ideas and inspiration come naturally to me through my daily life."[158] He has built a reputation for complex exploration of the broad themes of love and introspection,[21][3][76][78][80][87][123] as well as the ability to write both at speed and to improvise,[13][112][130] and consequently, developing songs with mature, profound lyricism,[76][82][118] clever wordplay,[159][160] storytelling,[3] evocative emotion and mood,[3][71][73][80][82][161] and symbolism[76].

After Stray Kids' appearance on Kingdom: Legendary War, 3RACHA began receiving attention and positive critiques for the imaginativeness and versatility of their production and mixing skills in rearranging both songs by other artists and their own work, particularly "Pray (I'll Be Your Man)" (originally by BTOB) and "Jasin", a mashup of their own songs ("God's Menu" and "Side Effects", which had each received very different domestic reception)..[35] Speaking on his work writing for Stray Kids, Han has expressed the desire that the band "become a genre" unto themselves,[17][158] which has been reflected in cultural acknowledgement of the group as fully self-produced[38] and their influence over the emergence of the "mala (taste)" genre,[19][20][116] with their "unique lyrics never seen before"[18] evoking both comfort and empathy in the listener[18] as well as the "strong"[38] and "addictive beats"[20] and a "variety of melodies" well-matched to their lyrics[18] creating distinctive musical stylings which "strengthened diversity in the KPop market"[20] as a defining influence of the fourth generation of K-Pop[13]

Additionally, Han has managed recording sessions for Stray Kids across many of their album and single releases, and has stated that when vocally directing, his preference remains focused on "bringing out each member's unique qualities" rather than strict adherence to his original ideas.[157]

Han wrote the song "Wish You Back" inspired by the 2016 romantic fantasy film Your Name;[3] the film's director, Makoto Shinkai, praised the track as "beautiful".[154][162]

Han has expressed a desire to write and perform an original soundtrack for a Korean drama, as well as expressing interest during an appearance on MMTG in composing a follow up to 13 after the EXchange couple who inspired the song, Seo Dong-jin and Song Da-hye, got back together.[84]

Besides his contribution to Stray Kids' discography and his individual material, Han has co-written and produced songs for other artists, predominantly artists associated with affiliates or sublabels of JYP Entertainment. These include Chinese artists Show Lo, Yao Chen, and JO1,[163] and most notably the song "Paradise", recorded by Japanese girl group NiziU as the theme for Doraemon: Nobita's Sky Utopia in 2023,[164][165] which became the first song produced by 3RACHA to hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Japan.[166]

Rapping and vocals

[edit]

A versatile rapper, Han is capable of fast, "spitfire" delivery[9][122][159][167] with clear diction,[116] cool and dynamic tone,[87][124] and smooth flow as well as melodic and lyrical rapping[21][3] and freestyling.[112][128] He has been ranked among the fastest rappers in South Korea.[122]

Having taken on increased singing duties for Stray Kids after the departure of the band's original main vocalist in 2019,[114] Han's vocals have garnered positive public and critical reception.[6][21][35][40][3][111][116][167][168] During an interview as part of promotions for Stray Kids' EP Maxident on K-909 in 2022, host BoA commented that Han's singing was of similar high standard to his rapping,[121] a view in line with Han's reputation for strong vocal delivery[35][76][113][116][117][119] with a "refreshing",[116] "warm",[6] and "smooth and soft singing voice"[111] capable of high notes,[9][21][41][77][118][167][116][119] falsetto,[116][120] and stable belting.[9][120] During Stray Kids' participation in reality competition Kingdom: Legendary War, Han received praise and attention for his vocal performance in the group's cover of BTOB's "(Pray) I'll Be Your Man",[35][3][111] including from fellow competitors The Boyz and BTOB,[9][35][117] as well as host Max Changmin of TVXQ.[114]

Since opening his personal Instagram account in March 2024,[169] Han has posted a variety of cover versions, including songs by Stephen Sanchez, Dean Lewis, tuki, and Silica Gel[115]. These have received widespread attention and praise for Han, including Esquire Hong Kong who reposted his cover of "Beautiful Things" with the comment, "a powerful voice, so charismatic that it's no wonder [Han is] called Straykids[sic] Ace".[113]

Dancing, stage presence and live performance

[edit]

As a live performer, Han has generally received highly positive critical reception,[3][170] noted for bringing "fierceness",[171] energy,[126] expressiveness,[114][131] and "depth"[124][131] to performances. His dance skills are generally well regarded, particularly for someone not in the official dance line of his group, with Han receiving praise for bringing musicality[114] and fluidity[123] to choreography. He has also received praise for being "naturally charming"[172] enough to draw audience attention,[120][131][173][174] with "handsome"[172] and "heartwarming visuals".[173]

Han is able to play both the piano and the guitar.[103][105][115][126][127][175]

Influences and influence

[edit]

Han was inspired to become a rapper by acts such as Tablo of Epik High,[9][67][176] Zico of Block B,[9] and Tiger JK,[157] as well as the rap line of BTOB. His father was also previously a rock musician,[21] which influenced Han to appear on both Lee Mujin Service[128] and King of Masked Singer.[5] Han is interested in band music,[8] particularly rock music of diverse subgenres and languages, including J-Rock bands One Ok Rock and Mrs. GREEN APPLE,[177] Australian pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, and Italian rock act Måneskin, as well as South Korean rock artists including YB, DAY6,[96] and Silica Gel.[115][178] Additionally, he has explored genres including R&B, bossa nova, and jazz as part of an expressive solo style distinctive from that of Stray Kids as a group.[21][124]

Han has been cited as an influence or inspiration by artists including Jongseob of British-South Korean boyband P1Harmony,[179] Alan Pasawee of Thai boyband BUS,[180] Kunho of South Korean boyband ALL(H)OURS,[181][182][183][184] Hyui and Seita of Japanese boyband NEXZ,[185][186] and Make Mate 1 contestant Lee Do-Ha.[187] Additionally, in an interview with FNC Entertainment, Japanese rock fusion act UVERworld named Stray Kids among Korean artists they felt stood out as "high quality" acts breaking down boundaries between idol culture and band culture.[188]

Awards and recognition

[edit]

In 2024, as part of 3RACHA, Han received the Best Creator Award at the Asia Artist Awards.[189][190][191] Han has received similar nominations (as part of 3RACHA) for Best Producer and Best Arranger at the Asian Pop Music Awards, and his work for Stray Kids has also received multiple nominations and awards at ceremonies including Asia Star Entertainer Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Circle Chart Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, iHeartRadio Music Awards, MAMA, and MTV Video Music Awards.

As part of Stray Kids, Han also received the Prime Minister's Commendation at the 2023 Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards.[192]

Individually, Han's solo compositions have ranked highly multiple times in the Genius Korea Daily Chart,[78] and he has consistently been the only fourth-generation idol to appear in the top 15 of the Idol Composer Trend Index (아이돌 작곡가 트렌드지수)[140][141][142][143][144][145][146][147][148][149][150][151][152][153] – spending just one week outside the top 10[144] – through every week of the first four months of 2024, and additionally did so despite no official solo single releases or guest features.

In July 2024, "twilight" (또 다시 밤), a song composed by Han and included as a B-side on Stray Kids' EP ATE, was his first solo-composition to hit the Billboard World Digital Sales Chart, debuting at number 10.[193] As of 31 July 2024, he was the most-followed member of Stray Kids on South Korean music service Melon.

Style and endorsements

[edit]

Han has cultivated a comfortable, quirky personal style, including check shirts,[84][172][173] cardigans, and streetwear.[194][195] Han has three tattoos.[196]

As a member of Stray Kids, Han has served as an ambassador for domestic and international fashion and cosmetic brand campaigns, including Bench, Clio, Mahagrid, Nacific, and Tommy Hilfiger; this led to Han, together with his bandmates, making his debut appearance at the Met Gala in May 2024.[197]

In 2024, Han made his first solo fashion appearance, modelling Balmain for W Korea as the cover star for two issues of a wider Stray Kids themed collection,[198][199][200][201][202] going on to wear several pre-release Balmain pieces while performing on tour with Stray Kids later in the year.

Personal life

[edit]

Han's family has a bichon frise named Bbama.[127][203] Whilst having few hobbies outside of music,[8] Han is a fan of horror films and anime[155][156] and enjoys fishing; he has also expressed interest in gastronomy, particularly concerning seafood, chocolate, desserts, and the cuisine of Malaysia, including bak kut teh, mangosteen, nasi goreng, and roti canai.[1][4]

Besides his native Korean, Han speaks English[112] and Japanese, to which he had further exposure after sharing a dorm with Japanese trainees prior to debut. He also has some familiarity with Mandarin Chinese and Malay.

Health

[edit]

In 2019, Han took a temporary break from attending secondary promotional activities with Stray Kids following being diagnosed with anxiety.[204]

Han came over to my place to cut the demo vocal (As far as I remember, it was pre-covid 19.) While I was laying down some additional strings, he sat in the back, writing lyrics. He was exhausted emotionally but I thought that he was being true to how he was as his words were genuine and heartfelt. It was great to see him again this year when we actually recorded the song with the whole members. But I must admit it was a very special moment when this song was actually born. Don't we all have those moments with the secret that can't be told?
