Gutidara (Bengali: গুটিদাড়া) is a traditional rural game of Bangladesh. It is a team sport, played with round balls (commonly known as Guti) are thrown out of bounds by hitting with small sticks, to score points. Basically it is a the traditional game of Brahmanbaria District. In this district there is a tradition of organizing Gutidaara game between the seniors and the youth.[1] In almost every villages of the district Gutidaara is played after harvesting.[2]

Gameplay

Gutidara is a team sport. The game is divided into two teams perticipate in a single game. There are 11 players on each team.[1] Gutidara is usually played in the field after harvest.[3] The boundaries of the field are determined by mutual understanding of the players. Each team get for 30 minutes or tries to hit the Guti with a stick and take it far out of bounds. The players of the opposite team try to catch the Guti. Every catch deducts the opponent's points. If any of the opposing team fails to take it while crossing the boundary, hitting team earns points. In this way, the team that earns more points is declared the winner.[4]

There are two referees to officiate the game. The opportunity to throw pieces is determined by coin toss.[2]

Equipments

The two main tools of the game are round piece locally known as Guti, made from water buffalo's horns and a one-and-a-half-cubit-long stick made of bamboo. Pieces made from buffalo horns are currently scarce and often played with machine-made artificial pieces.[1]

Traditions

Gutidara is prevalent in Brahmanbaria district. Although the game is not practiced everywhere in Bangladesh, it is considered as a tradition of Bangladesh. Under the initiative of the local literary academy in Brahmanbaria, there is a tradition of organizing gutidara matches among the young and old every year in Sherpur of the municipal area of the Brahmanbaria.[5] In addition to the annual competition, players go to different places including Shahbazpur, Sarail of the district to participate in the competition.[4]
