Guglielmo Pietro I of Ventimiglia and Tenda (1230 - 1283) was an Italian nobleman and chivalrous knight who was involved in several notable military campaigns.
Life
[edit]He was born to Guillaume III, Seigneur de Roquebrune in 1230.<[1][2]
He was married to Eudoxia Laskarina and had three children.[3][4]
Biography
[edit]He acted as mediator between Byzantium, interested in countering the designs of Charles of Anjou on Constantinople, and the Kingdom of Castile, where his daughter Vatatza would soon inherit such offices.[7][8]
Around June-July 1271, Alfonso X the Wise , king of Castile , sent him as ambassador – together with the Dominican friar Oddomario – to the municipality of Pavia and the Ghibelline League . The aim was to ratify the treaty of alliance with the Lombards, as well as define the recognition of the Iberian sovereign as the new emperor. In exchange, Alfonso promised to send – by March 1272 – a thousand armed men to support the military operations of the Ghibellines. The treaty was sanctioned by a solemn public ceremony – in which Enrico II Ventimiglia del Maro , his cousin and head of the Lombard delegation, was probably not uninvolved.[9][10]
The Lombard communities prepared to nominate their representatives, who on the last day of July left for Castile, with the aim of swearing loyalty to Alfonso. The delegates elected by the Municipality of Pavia were the judge Laurengo de' Bucentauri and Gualterone.[11][12]
Career
[edit]He served as the lord of the city of Ventimiglia until the agreement with Genoa of 30 July 1249.[13][14]
