Odetari – "GMFU"

"GMFU" (an acronym for "Got Me Fucked Up") is a song by American singers, Odetari and 6arelyhuman, from the former's extended play (EP) XIII Sorrows and the latter's EP Myspace Addiction (2023). Written by both performers, it was described by critical commentary as a "dark" and "eccentric" anthem. It was released as the second single promoting the aforementioned projects of both performers on July 26, 2023, through Artist Partner Group. "GMFU" peaked at number five on the US Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart, becoming Odetari's fourth and 6arleyhuman's first top-ten entry on the survey. It received a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Composition and reception

[edit]

"GMFU" was written by Odetari and 6arleyhuman, with the former handling the production.[1] Billboard's Katie Bain proclaimed it as a "dark, thumping anthem about 'going dumb' from partying".[2] Jacob Saltzberg from Earmilk said that "GMFU" examplifise XIII Sorrows' "raw" and "hyperactive" synth layers "with the eccentric bounce".[3] Craig Lindsey from Chron noted that the track is "much beloved [by] children" and follows the trope of Odetari's "vulgar [and] eye-chatching" song titles.[4]

Release and promotion

[edit]

"GMFU" was released on July 26, 2023, through Artist Partner Group for digital download and streaming.[5][6] Five days later, a sped up and slowed and reverbed renditions were released on a side-account of the artists.[7][8] Additionally, the Abnormal remix, dubbed as a club mix, was released on October 16, 2023.[9] The song was featured on Odetari's second EP XIII Sorrows, released on September 13, 2023,[10] as well as 6arelyhuman's second EP Myspace Addiction released week later.[11] In tandem with XIII Sorrows release, "GMFU" music video was published on YouTube, becoming Odetari's first visual.[10]

In the United States, "GMFU" debuted on number 27 on Billboard-curated Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart on chart issue August 5, 2023.[12] After twelve consecutive weeks of charting, it reached a peak at number five,[13] becoming Odetari's fourth, and 6arelyhuman's first, top ten entry.[14] On January 8, 2024, Billboard reported that the song ammassed 91.9 million on-demand streams in the country since its release.[2] Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified "GMFU" gold on March 15, 2024, for shipping 500,000 copies in the US.[15] Elsewhere, the single entered New Zealand Hot Singles chart at number 35 on chart issue August 3, 2023, peaking at number 23 the following week.[13]
