A pop-up canopy (or portable gazebo or frame tent in some countries) is a shelter that collapses down to a size that is portable. Typically, canopies of this type come in sizes from five feet by five feet to ten feet by twenty feet. Larger or semi-permanent canopies are known as "marquees".

Structure

[edit]

Most pop-up canopies come in two pieces, the canopy frame and the canopy top. The canopy frame is constructed of either steel or aluminium. Steel framed canopies are heavier, stronger and typically cost less than aluminium frames. Recently, stainless steel has been used because it is lighter than steel, stronger than aluminium and, as aluminium, does not rust.

Tops for most canopies are made from a polyester fabric.

High quality canopies should come with a fabric that is UV resistant.

Most pop-up canopies are open-sided and without walls, distinguishing them from larger marquees or semi-permanent shelters.

A retractable tent, also known as an instant tent, is a type of tent for, designed for quick and easy set up.[1][2]

Unlike traditional tents that require assembling poles and securing with stakes, retractable tents use a spring-loaded wire frame that allows the tent to automatically open and take shape when released from the carrying case. compact, round shape when closed.[3][4]

Folding tent technology consists of spring-loaded poles and sturdy fabric that allow them to automatically lift and unfold from a packed round form factor into a tent.[5][6][7] The poles are designed to flex in the open position, lifting and stretching the tent fabric as it straightens out.

Uses

[edit]

Pop up canopies have become very popular for sporting events, festivals and trade shows. They are also known as pit tents when used in the context of amateur or semi-professional motorsport.

Some commercial canopy companies are even beginning to silk screen and digitally print on the custom canopy tops to promote the company using them.

Sliding awnings are also used to create shade to keep drinks and snacks cool in the shade.

These tents are suitable for outdoor events with multiple areas/stations, outdoor markets, small medical tents, personal outings, etc.[8][9][10] Multiple canopy tents can be set up together for a carnival or outdoor game night, and a single canopy tent can be a necessary seating area at an outdoor event.
