Date
Source
English: * Original source: The Oysterette yearbook, 1953, published by Oyster Bay High School in Oyster Bay, New York.
  • Immediate source: Reproduced on page 171 of Clifford Mead's 1989 book Thomas Pynchon: a Bibliography of Primary and Secondary Materials, published by the Dalkey Archive Press, ISBN 0-916583-37-6. Scanned copy of the book accessed via the Internet Archive. Minor retouching by uploader—see upload history for unretouched original.
Author
English: Photo presumably taken by "Mr. DiLillo", who was identified as staff photographer of The Oysterette (Mead 1989, p. 170).
Permission
(Reusing this file)
English: No permission is required because the photo is in the public domain. Without an original hard copy or full scan, it is impossible to determine whether The Oysterette was published with a valid copyright notice. However, even if it did carry a valid notice, the copyright was not renewed as required to extend the copyright term of US works published prior to 1964. See the online searchable Copyright Catalog (1978 to present). The 1953 edition of The Oysterette would have to have been renewed in its 27th or 28th year, either 1980 or 1981. It was not, so any copyright protection would have expired at that time.
This is a retouched picture, which means that it has been digitally altered from its original version. Modifications made by Blz 2049.

Licensing

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain
This work is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1929 and 1963, and although there may or may not have been a copyright notice, the copyright was not renewed. For further explanation, see Commons:Hirtle chart and the copyright renewal logs.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
