35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Chiroptera; Family: Vespertilionidae; Genus: Myotis; Genus species: Myotis lucifugus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 4 cm; Weight: 5-14 g; Identification: The little brown bat can be a variety of shades of brown; Habitat: Forests close to water; Diet: Carnivore: insectivore, particularly insects with aquatic larvae stages; Reproduction: During the summer, females will move to maternity sites, although breeding doesn't occur until fall. Gestation lasts 50-60 days, with one or two young being born in May-June. The babies can fly by three weeks of age. These bats can live up to 33 years old; Social Structure: Females often form large colonies (up to 1000 individuals) in warm dry areas. Males will join these colonies after the young are born; Behavior: Like most bats, little brown bats are nocturnal and hunt via echolocation; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Bats are well-known carriers of rabies, a disease that is contagious and deadly to humans. Predators of little brown bats include hawks, owls, raccoons, minks, and leopard frogs. |
