Text Appearing Before Image:
. The chief attraction is a large boiling spring atthe base of the mountain on the west side. On theopposite side of the road are numerous mud caldrons andsprings, the contents of which are varied, some being ofthick mud, others of leaden-hued water, all incessantlyagitated and throwing upon their surrounding edges afinely mixed muddy deposit. The road from SulphurMountain to the Canyon Hotel soon joins the mainroad along the river, passes over a rolling country, andskirts the banks of the Yellowstone until nearly to theUpper Falls. Grand Canyon Bridge.—The construction of thismagnificent driveway over Yellowstone River, at thehead of the rapids above the Upper Falls, affords visitorsan opportunity of now viewing the Grand Canyon fromthe opposite side; also of descending into the Canyon to the foot of the Great Falls, by the only possible trail. The chief attraction is Artists Point, from which an un-obstructed view of the Falls and Canvon is obtained. 90 YEl,I.OWSTONE NATIONAI^ PARK.
Text Appearing After Image:
GRAND CANYON BRIDGE. UPPER FALLS OF THE YELLOWSTONE. About a quarter of a mile above the Upper Falls thecurrent becomes very rapid, tumbling over a succes-sion of cascades and swirling around masses of rockleft surrounded in mid-stream. Just before reachingthe brink of the falls, the river makes an abrupt turn to the eastv^ard, from w^hich fact an unobstructed view ofthe falls cannot be obtained from the hotel side. Abovethe falls a jutting point of rock affords an excellentview of the rapids and the foaming waters rushing onover the precipice itself. The Upper Falls have a per-pendicular drop of 140 feet, and the water, striking theshelving rock formation at the bottom of the abyss, shoots out rocket-like columns plainly seen from theledge above. A quarter of a mile below, the river takesanother leap of 360 feet, called the Lower or Great TOUR OF THE PARlv. 91
