Portion used |
Entire image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) to preserve the film's cinematography and avoid misrepresenting the work in any way. |
Low resolution? |
Low: the video has been compressed and downscaled to 320 x 248 pixels, less than .1 megapixels in size for each frame, downgraded from the original resolution of 720 x 576 pixels. At a frame rate of 25p, the 14 seconds contained in this video contains roughly 350 frames out of a total of roughly 145300—0.002 percent of the total motion picture. The file has been encoded twice and the video has been compressed to a bit rate 217 kbps, much less than the source file, as well as a reduction in audio bit rate. Copies made from this video will be inferior to the original DVD, preserving commercial opportunities, and unsuitable for illegal uses being such a small portion of the film. |
Purpose of use |
The clip is used to illustrate the way in which the director used doubles of his characters to explore dualism, in this case the dual nature of the film's two active murderers. As described in the article, Neal and Giermani are set up as both doubles and mirrors of one another; the shot precedes the moment where the former kills the latter. Analysis of the film stressed the doubling of the characters; Neal appropriates Giermani's role as investigator, and in this shot finally makes him "go away"; this shot makes literal the culmination of his attempts to replace him. The scene is also representative of how doubles of characters are used throughout the film, visually, literally, metaphorically. This moment was not scripted, but resulted from the director's noticing the actors' similar build while they were stood, one behind the other in front of him. In addition, as one of the most stylistically influential moments in the film, the shot was copied and referenced in many subsequent films. As such, the scene is not just representative of Tenebrae, but helps with understanding of films that followed. These themes and motifs would be difficult to convey using words, and the clip presents a broader insight into these effects than a description of this scene alone would provide. |
