"Eureka" (Japanese pronunciation: [jɯɾꜜːka]) is a song by Japanese singer-songwriter and musician Gen Hoshino, set to be released as a digital-only single on January 28, 2025. Written, produced, and arranged by Hoshino for the medical drama Madoka 26-sai, Kenshū-i Yattemasu! , it is a jazz and soul-influenced track inspired by the things Hoshino did not understand when he was 26-years-old, the same age as the show's protagonist.
Background
[edit]On January 8, 2025, it was announced that Gen Hoshino would perform "Eureka", the theme song to the TBS Television medical drama Madoka 26-sai, Kenshū-i Yattemasu! . Hoshino based the song around when he was 26-year-old like the drama's protagonist. At that time, he was not yet signed to debut as a solo artist, but still wrote songs which he stored away. He recalled having penned a lyric containing the word wakaranai (わからない, lit. 'I don't understand') and retrospectively thought that he never had a moment of eureka.[1] Written, produced, and arranged by Hoshino, outlets reported that the song has the essences of his musical "roots" in jazz and soul.[2][3]
Release and promotion
[edit]"Eureka" was first previewed in the first episode of Madoka 26-sai on January 14, 2025; on the morning before the premiere, Hoshino posted a ten-second video clip to his social media with the text "Gen Hoshino Eureka", played over the sound of maracas.[4] Upon the premiere, Hoshino announced that the song would be digitally released as a single on January 28, 2025, his 44th birthday.[3][5]
A teaser for the song's music video, starring Hoshino and directed by Kotori Kawashima, was published alongside the announcement.[3] The single's cover art, photographed by Kawashima and designed by Hiromi Fujita, depicts Hoshino looking towards the sky as he is covered by sunlight. To promote the release, Hoshino's label announced campaigns awarding a phone wallpaper and stickers based on the cover art to users who pre-save or download the song.[6]
