Essie Dunbar
Appearance
Essie Williams Dunbar (1892–1962) was an American woman who, in 1915, was declared dead and subsequently half-buried during her funeral. When her sister arrived late, the coffin was reopened upon her request, revealing Dunbar alive, smiling, and breathing. This unexpected discovery caused a scene of chaos, as three preachers present at the funeral fell into the grave in shock. In their scramble to escape, two of the preachers trampled the shortest among them, resulting in three broken ribs for that individual.[1][2][3]
