"Es kam ein Herr zum Schlößi" (A knight came to the castle) is a cradle song from German and Swiss folklore.

The song has been widespread throughout Switzerland as a lullaby. First published not later than 1778–79. Under the title "Um die Kinder still und artig zu machen" (To still children), included in the first song-book of the German folklore collection 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' (1806).

A sample with a tune and Swiss words (written in the Swiss dialect of German) may be found in the work by Wyss (1818).

Um die Kinder still und artig zu machen Es kam ein Herr zum Schlößli Auf einem schönen Rößli, Da lugt die Frau zum Fenster aus Und sagt: „Der Mann ist nicht zu Haus' Und niemand heim als Kinder Und 's Mädchen auf der Winden.“ Der Herr auf seinem Rößli, Sagt zu der Frau im Schlößli: „Sind's gute Kind', sind's böse Kind'? Ach, liebe Frau, ach sagt geschwind.“ Die Frau, die sagt: „Sehr böse Kind', Sie folgen Muttern nicht geschwind.“ Da sagt der Herr: „So reit' ich heim, Dergleichen Kinder brauch' ich kein'.“ Und reit' auf seinem Rößli Weit, weit entweg vom Schlößli.

Poetic translation  A knight came to the castle  Upon a stallion gusty.  Here looked the hostess out the window  And said: 'My husband is not indoors'.    'And no one but the children  And our maid with linen'.  The rider from his saddle  Then asketh th' honest lady:    'But are the children good enough?  Ah, dear mistress, tell me now!'.  The woman said: 'Too naughty ones,  They neither follow me at once'. The rider said: 'Then must I leave, Of children such, we have no need.' And rode upon his Gusty Back from the forlorn castle.
