Dunlap is an unincorporated community in Cottle County, in the U.S. state of Texas.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 10 in 2000.
History
[edit]Sam White and Doss Swearingen, the owners of the OX Ranch, sold portions of it to J.M. Abbott and W.B. Dunlap, causing the settlement of the area in 1906. A post office was established at Dunlap in 1908 and remained in operation until 1970. It had a cotton gin for a long time. Its population was reported as 100 in 1915, went up to 113 in 1940, then plummeted to 30 in 1980. Residents attended the local First Methodist Church and Church of Christ in the 1970s. The population remained at 30 in 1990, then further decreased to 10 in 2000.[2]
Geography
[edit]Dunlap is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 83 and Farm to Market Road 2998, 8 mi (13 km) north of Paducah and 22 mi (35 km) south of Childress in north-central Cottle County.[3]
Education
[edit]Dunlap had its own school in 1908 and joined the Paducah Independent School District in 1936.[2]
