Dundrum Village Centre, is a shopping centre located in Dundrum, Dublin, Ireland. It is located just north of the larger Dundrum Town Centre.

History

[edit]

Dundrum Village Centre opened in 1971 under the name Dundrum Shopping Centre. It was one of the first purpose-built shopping centres in Ireland. It was renamed "Dundrum Village Centre" after the opening of the large multi-building retail complex known as Dundrum Town Centre,[2][3] and, controlled by the same parties as that centre, its redevelopment was originally planned as "phase 2" of the Dundrum Town Centre overall development.[4][5]

Plans

[edit]

In 2008, planning permission was granted by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for the Village Centre to be demolished and replaced with 50,000 square metres of shopping, restaurants, a 96-room hotel, 40 residential units and a public library.[4][5] The plans were put on hold in 2015, following consideration of the 2011 flooding of the Town Centre by the River Slang, and the flood risk which might arise with an expanded centre.[6]

In 2019, the co-owners of Dundrum Town Centre Hammerson, put forward new plans to develop the Village Centre further, including a range of shops and dining facilities, a high-rise tower and over 800 apartments.[7]

Public Transport

[edit]

The shopping centre is served by the Dundrum Stop of the Luas green line. It is also served by Dublin Bus routes 14, L25, 44, 44b, 44d and 74, and Go-Ahead Ireland route 161.
