Clarification needed

In the proof of the theorem section, one of the steps involves adding a vector in X to the value of the norm of a vector in X, the norm is presumably being a real number. I don't see anywhere that it is assumed that the vector space X permits the addition of a vector in X with a real number to produce a vector in X.
