Yuquijiro Yocoh (Yukihiro Yokoo(March 31, 1925 – December 25, 2009) )was a Japanese classical guitarist and composer who developed the guitar during the dawn of the postwar Japanese guitar scene.

Biography

On 31 March 1925 , Yokoo paper wholesaler in Kawaramachi, Hita City, Oita Prefecture, was born. [1] His father was Toji Yokoo and his mother was Tokie. He was the third son of seven siblings. Both of his parents were skilled calligraphers and worked on making posters for the town. His grandfather was a teacher in the furniture department at Hita Technical School.

In 1939, when he was in his third year of junior high school, Yokoo was influenced by a guitar brought home by his older brother Daisuke, who was attending university in Kyoto, and began teaching himself how to play the guitar. Although he entered Keiseong Dental College (now Seoul National University) with top grades, he had a strong desire to pursue guitar and dropped out despite his parents' objections. Shortly thereafter, World War II broke out and he was sent to Manchuria (Manchurian Unit 97). During this time he was assaulted by a senior soldier, resulting in a perforated eardrum and causing him to suffer from hearing loss in his left ear and severe tinnitus for the rest of his life. The war ended when Yokoo was 20 years old. Yokoo described his tinnitus as sounding like cicadas chirping loudly in his ears, and at one point he was seen slamming his desk as he lamented the war.

In 1955, shortly after the end of the war, he developed a friendship with another guitarist, Kyomoto Sukenori, and studied guitar with him in Moji, Fukuoka Prefecture. Together they moved to Tokyo. At this time, Yokoo married Ogata Fumi from Tajima, Hita City, Oita Prefecture. The first classical guitar concert in Japan since the war was held in Tokyo.

1959, age 34. His representative work, "Sakura Variations (Three Variations)", was completed. In the same year, he began to study Spanish on his own after Andres Segovia decided to come to Japan. He served as an interpreter when Segovia visited Japan. He continued to study Spanish throughout his life and made friends with many guitarists from around the world. His signature, Yuquijiro.Yocoh, is written in the alphabet and is Spanish.

The Japan Guitarists Association was founded on 31 July 1969. Yokoo has served as a judge for the Newcomer Award selection concert since the first award was held, and has served as vice chairman and permanent advisor for 20 years. Yokoo's dynamic and unique handwriting is highly regarded and he has been designing banners and certificates for guitar competitions for a long time.

Wrote the cover of Guitar Nippon, a magazine published by Guitar Nippon Sha in 1966.

In the 1970s, he was invited to Taiwan as a state guest and met Chen Zhao-er and Chang Yi-xiong, with whom he developed a close friendship.

Yokoo was also admired by Egyptian singer and oud player Hamza El Deen.

In addition to running his own guitar classes, he has worked as a music instructor at Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Gakushuin University, International University of Commerce, Rikkyo University, and other universities.

Yokoo's composing activities were carried out without leaving out a single note. He developed the √ (root) and double tremolo, which had a major impact on the guitar world. The use of the square root and double tremolo became popular with the release of the Sakura Variations, enabling a wide range of advanced performances.

His nephew is Shunsuke Yokoo, one of the most famous guitar luthiers in Japan.

Person

He was interested in physics and was passionate about studying everything from observing nature such as plants and insects to chemistry, space and languages, and he loved reading dictionaries. He also liked old antiques and tools, and would say, "To others it may be junk, but to me it is a treasure," and he would use his things for a long time and cherish them.

During the Second World War, he served in Manchuria, where he lost more than half of his hearing in his left ear and suffered from severe tinnitus for the rest of his life. He felt a strong sense of anger and emptiness at how pointless war is, and at the fact that both enemies and allies fight while thinking of their hometowns, and this experience had a major impact on his later musical activities. As part of his postwar musical activities, he has arranged for classical guitar songs familiar to the people of each country, such as children's songs from around the world. He performed these songs during his world tour from 1990 to 1991.

Regarding playing theory, Yokoo said, "Songs that sound easy are more difficult than songs that sound difficult," and he created many practice songs and compositions to spread the joy of playing the guitar. He never compromised until he found a sound that he was satisfied with. The numerous practice pieces that show the finer details of fingering, Yokoo's attention to detail in making sure players can learn in an enjoyable way, and his gentle personality are all evident. On the other hand, Yokoo's own playing style and music were so particular that even professional guitarists described them as difficult. Moreover, Yokoo's style is clearly evident in not only his solo pieces but also his duets and trio pieces, and his previously published collections of duets and trios were so popular that they were reprinted, but the publisher went bankrupt and they are no longer available.

Yokoo often appears in hakama at guitar competitions and music concerts. He wears a white kimono and dark blue hakama. He has a thick, black Kaiser mustache under his nose. He has an unapproachable appearance reminiscent of the Taisho era, but he doesn't get hung up on details and enjoys silly jokes, alcohol and tobacco. His unpretentious
