Development at DreamWorks Animation

On April 11, 2018, it was announced that Leo Matsuda (director of award-winning 2016 Disney short Inner Workings) would write and direct Yokai Samba, a coming-of-age DreamWorks film based on the folklore of the same name.[1]

Shift to Paramount

On March 2, 2021, the film moved to Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies.[2] This was reaffirmed in June 2024.[3]
