History & Recognition

[edit]

The company was founded in 2017 by Toby Witte.[4]

Prior to its founding Dwell described how Toby Witte's work ''gently asserts its own presence in the city"[5] and The New York Times[6] and Charlotte Magazine[7] featured his Schoenberg Residence.

in 2018 The Charlotte Observer described the firm's work as a "labor of passion."[8]

In 2021 Build Magazine called Wittehaus the "most innovative design firm in North Carolina".[9]

In 2023 principal Toby Witte published a book about the history and design ideas behind single-family homes in the United States: Supersizing Bliss: How We Have Betrayed Our Homes And The Happiness We Seek. The Kirkus Review suggested "his vivid prose ably evokes the psychological impact of material structures" and "the result is an absorbing brief for great architecture as a human necessity."[10]

In 2023 The American Institute of Architects included the firms' Gillingham Strauss Residence and Pavilion in a tour of modern homes.[11]

Following the completion of the Gerendák lake home in 2023, The Wall Street Journal described the company's work as "European style modernism, with an emphasis on sustainability".[1] It recognized its "works to counter [...] a sea of heartless, uninspired houses provided to North American homeowners."[1] It showcased Gerendák as an example of a home that "is almost net zero, meaning it produces almost as much energy as it uses during the year."[1]

Marquis Who's Who recognized principal Toby Witte in 2023 for his "dedication to the field of architecture"[4] and his work on "custom, modern, and energy-efficient homes in North and South Carolina."[4]

in 2024 Architectural Digest described Wittehaus' philosophy as "fashioning homes that both reflect the client and interact beautifully with their natural environment."[12] In their words Wittehaus "designs homes for happiness."[12]
