Water Polo in New South Wales
[edit]Water polo has been played in New South Wales (NSW), Australia since 1880[1] and is traditionally a popular summer sport within the state for both clubs and schools.
The governing body for water polo in the state is Water Polo New South Wales, which is responsible for the organisation and administration of metropolitan and country water polo, including the oldest water polo competition contested in Australia in 'The Sydney Super League' (SSL), formerly known as the Metropolitan Water Polo Premiership and the Rawson Cup.
NSW men’s representative teams were selected from as early as 1894 until 1995, and NSW women’s representative teams were selected from 1967 until 2002, when the Open National Championships were placed on hold in favour of the current National League.[2] NSW representative teams have continued to be selected annually for junior and age group boys and girls since 1971.
The NSW Open Men’s and Women’s water polo teams, known as 'the blues', have traditionally been the most successful Australian domestic water polo teams, winning 27 and 16 national titles respectively.[3]
