The Waldner Cup is an annual table tennis invitational between Team Asia and Team World. It was proposed by Jan-Ove Waldner, who also captained Team World. It debuted in 2024 in Oslo, Norway in the Waldner Cup Venue (Gullhaug Torg 3, 0484)[1] and was run from 11-15 December, although matches were only played from 14-15 December. The event was streamed on the Waldner Cup's official streaming website for a one-time fee.
Originally set to start 23-26 November 2023, it was postponed to not conflict with the WTT schedule and allow more time for the event to be developed. The 2023 Team World was Timo Boll, Bernadette Szocs, Dimitij Ovtcharov, Alexis Lebrun, Felix Lebrun, Hugo Calderano, Truls Möregårdh, and Adriana Diaz, captained by Jan Ove Waldner, while the 2023 Team Asia was Chen Meng, Wang Chuqin, Jang Woo-jin, Manika Batra, and Lim Jong-hoon, captained by Ma Long and vice-captained by Kasumi Ishikawa.[2]
Format
[edit]All singles matches are played as best-of-three 11-point sets under standard rules. Winning a match earns a team one point if the match is from Day 1 and two points if the match is from Day 2.[3] Eight matches are played each day, and there are no tie-breakers for an even scoreline at the end of Day 2.
In addition to the main event, the 2024 edition of the Waldner Cup hosted several charity events for sponsors and fans. On 11 December, the cup held an open press conference with the players managed by commentator Adam Bobrow.[4] On 12-13 December a D'Sound concert was held and charity/exhibition matches were played between: Ma Long/Magnus Holm VS Jan Ove Waldner/Eskil Lindholm (Holm and Lindholm won a Norwegian tournament to play in this match), Zaineb Al-Samarai/Hugo Calderano and Christian Ibenfeldt/Bernadette Szőcs, Truls Möregardh and Tommy Urhaug, Aida Dahlen and Chen Meng, and Ma Long and Jan-Ove Waldner.[5]
