Vincent Piket is a Dutch diplomat who has served in various capacities within the European Union's External Action Service (EEAS). He is notably recognized for his tenure as the European Union Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam from November 20, 2019, to October 23, 2023. Prior to this appointment, Piket held several significant positions, contributing to the EU's diplomatic missions across different regions.

Early Life and Education

Vincent Piket holds a Doctorate in Arts from Radboud University, Nijmegen, in the Netherlands. He also completed a Master of Arts at Radboud University and the University of Hull in the United Kingdom. Additionally, he was a Fellow of the American Studies Department at Yale University in the United States and is an alumnus of the Fulbright Program. He is also a Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies. Piket is fluent in English, French, German, and Dutch.[1]

Diplomatic Career

Vincent Piket has had a distinguished career within the European Union's diplomatic service, holding several key positions:

EU Senior Advisor, Prime-Minister’s Department, Government of Moldova (2023-Present): Piket started a new position as a Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister in Chisinau, Moldova.[2] The goal of Piket's placement in Moldova is to assist its integration within the EU. There is a need to generate robust benefits for the Moldovan people through the association with the EU.[3]

Ambassador of the European Union to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam (2019–2023): Piket presented his Letters of Credence to the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, on November 20, 2019, officially commencing his tenure. During his term, he worked to strengthen EU relations with Indonesia and Brunei, focusing on areas such as trade, investment, education, and regional cooperation.[4]

Head of Division for Algeria, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia (2016–2019): Based in Brussels, Piket led EU relations with key North African nations during a period of significant regional developments.[1] For example, in April 2018 Vincent participated in a hearing organized by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) titled "EU-Morocco Relations: The Current State of Play."[5][6]

During the hearing, Piket contributed to discussions on the implications of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) judgment concerning Western Sahara and its impact on EU-Morocco relations. His insights were part of a broader dialogue aimed at addressing challenges and future prospects in the cooperation between the European Union and Morocco. Head of the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao (2012–2016): In this role, Piket was responsible for overseeing the EU's relations with Hong Kong and Macao, focusing on political, economic, and trade matters.[1]

Ambassador and Head of Delegation, Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia (2008–2012): Piket led efforts to enhance EU-Malaysia relations, focusing on trade, education, and cultural exchanges. In March 2023, he delivered a lecture at Universiti Brunei Darussalam titled "The European Union (EU) as a Global Actor in the Indo-Pacific," discussing the EU's role and policies in the region.[8]

In June 2023, Piket participated in an Ambassador Lecture at Hasanuddin University in Indonesia, focusing on "European Union Policies and Future Challenges," where he engaged with students and faculty on the EU's strategic outlook.[9]

During his tenure as Head of the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao from 2012 to 2016, Vincent Piket authored several opinion pieces for the South China Morning Post (SCMP), focusing on topics such as climate change and the European Union's role in global affairs. Notable articles include:

Before joining the European Union, Piket served as the Head of Projects Department at the Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Education from 1989 to 1992. He was also an Assistant Lecturer at the English-American Department of Radboud University from 1984 to 1989.[1]

Personal Life

Vincent Piket is of Dutch nationality. He is married and has one child.[1] His father, Joannes Josephus Christiaan (Jan) Piket, was a distinguished Dutch geographer and cartographer, serving as a professor of physical geography and cartography at Radboud University Nijmegen. Jan Piket was born on March 23, 1925, in Zwammerdam and passed away on January 22, 2020, in Berg en Dal, Netherlands.[14][15]
