Vincent Eltschinger is a Swiss Indologist and Buddhist scholar who focuses on classical Buddhist philosophy, such as the epistemological-logical tradition of Buddhism (Yogacara).[1]
After graduating from the Collège Saint-Michel in Fribourg, Eltschinger initially studied philosophy and religious history at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). He then turned to Indology, Sanskrit and Buddhist studies and transferred to the University of Lausanne, where he obtained his master's degree in 1996. From 1998 to 2003 he taught at the Department of Oriental Languages and Cultures at the University of Lausanne. He received his doctorate there in 2003 under Tom Tillemans; his dissertation dealt with the polemic of the Buddhist philosopher Dharmakirti against the orthodox-Brahmanical idea of a Veda without an author.
Eltschinger then worked for twelve years at the Institute for Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia (IKGA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. In 2014 he qualified as a professor at the University of Vienna. From April 2014 to October 2015 he headed the IKGA as interim director. He also taught as a visiting professor at the universities of Vienna, Leiden, Budapest and Leipzig. In professional terms, Vincent Eltschinger has made a name for himself primarily as an interpreter of the Indian philosopher Dharmakirti (6th-7th century) and with his discussion of the self (ātman, pudgala) in Buddhism.
In 2015, Eltschinger was elected a corresponding member of the Philosophical-Historical Class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In the same year, he was appointed as Directeur d'études to a chair for the history of Indian Buddhism at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE) in Paris, thus ending his creative period in Vienna.
