From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viktor Mechtcherine (* 18 September 1964 in Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg, Russia) is a Russian-German civil engineer and university lecturer who specialises in the field of construction materials engineering.

Life and professional career

[edit]

Viktor Mechtcherine was born in Leningrad (now St Petersburg) in 1964. He received a scientific and technical education in the former Soviet Union. Mechtcherine studied civil engineering at the Leningrad University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, where he discovered his interest in concrete technology and building materials research at an early age and graduated with honours in 1986. After successfully completing his studies and holding various positions in the former Soviet Union, he completed his doctorate in the late 1990s in the field of construction and materials science at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), graduating with honours in 2000.

Mechtcherine has been Director of the Institute of Construction Materials and holder of the Chair of Construction Materials at Technische Universität Dresden since 2006[1]

Research and scientific contributions

[edit]

Mechtcherine focusses on current issues in building materials technology, whereby he strives to solve acute problems in construction practice and to create solid theoretical foundations in equal measure. His research is characterised above all by interdisciplinary work. Current research foci include in particular:

  • Additive manufacturing of cement-based building materials (3D printing),
  • Rheology,
  • Mechanical behaviour of composites,
  • Behaviour of cement-based composites under high distortion rates (impact),
  • Sustainable building material design and
  • Multifunctional building materials.[2]

Viktor Mechtcherine is the author or co-author of over 400 scientific publications. He has initiated and led a large number of research projects, including coordinated programmes of the European Union and the German Research Foundation (DFG), or has been involved in projects.[3]

Significance and honours

[edit]

Mechtcherine has received several awards for his research, including the Wason Medal for Materials Research from the American Concrete Institute (ACI)Awards[4] and the Innovation Award in the Research category at bauma 2016 in Munich for the development of ConPrint 3D technology. Mechtcherine has been an honorary professor at the State Technological University "V. G. Shukhov", Belgorod (Russia) since 2015 and a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences since 2017. In 2021, he was accepted as a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).[5]
