Vepathangudi Ramachandrarao Devika (Dr. V. R. Devika) is an Indian educator, scholar, storyteller, and cultural activist. She is the founder and managing trustee of The Aseema Trust[1], a nonprofit organization focused on linking traditional performing arts with education, as well as promoting the educational values of Mahatma Gandhi[2]. Dr. Devika is widely recognized for her work in promoting arts education, Gandhian philosophy, and her contributions to cultural preservation.

Early life and education

Dr. Devika earned her PhD from the Department of Philosophy at the University of Madras, where her thesis was titled "Gandhian Communication for Transformation: Philosophical Issues and Dimensions." This work explored the use of Gandhian principles in transformative communication.

Career and contributions

Dr. Devika has had a long and distinguished career in education, arts, and cultural activism. From 1985 to 1996, she served as the Director of Education and Culture for the Madras Craft Foundation and its project Dakshinachitra, where she pioneered the integration of folk arts in education[3]. This initiative encouraged schools in Chennai to actively engage with folk artists, sparking a significant cultural movement in the educational landscape.

She also worked as a school teacher at P.S. Senior Secondary School in Chennai from 1976 to 1985 and has served as a consultant for various educational institutions such as Pathashaala, KFI, Vallipuram, and VIT Chennai. Dr. Devika has been involved with the Sangeet Natak Academy as a member of its Folk Arts and Puppetry Advisory Committee.

Dr. Devika is trained in Bharatanatyam under the guidance of The Dhananjayans and has conducted extensive research on Indian folk forms. She is a prominent storyteller and frequently lectures on Indian dance, culture, and the philosophy of art.

Additionally, Dr. Devika has worked in broadcasting, serving as a compere, interviewer, and production assistant at All India Radio since 1974. She has appeared on several television programs in various capacities, including as an interviewee, interviewer, and panelist.

Writing and publications

Dr. Devika is a prolific writer, contributing to numerous national and international journals. She has served as an art critic and regular contributor to leading Indian newspapers such as The Hindu, The WEEK, The Indian Express, and Financial Express. She also wrote a fortnightly column titled "The View from the Wings" for Madras Musings and guest-edited a folk arts journal for the Sangeet Natak Academy.

In 2024, she authored the book "A Life Immersed in Dance"[4], focusing on the legacy of Rukmini Devi Arundale, a pioneering figure in the revival of Bharatanatyam. She has also authored the coffee table book "Ward 10 – Remembering Rangabashyam"[5] and contributed to "Weavers", an English language textbook series published by Indiannica (formerly Encyclopedia Britannica India Ltd.).

Dr. Devika has travelled extensively, presenting lectures and participating in conferences across the globe. She has visited countries including Cambodia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the USA.
