From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vasilije "Šujo" Karadžić (Serbian Cyrillic: Василије Шујо Караџић; 1787 - 1857) was a renowned Drobnjak hajduk before becoming a revolutionary in Karađorđe's Serbia.

Biography

[edit]

Vasilije "Šujo" Karadžić came from Old Herzegovnian and was a member of the famed Serbian Drobnjaci tribe hailing from the Drobnjak region. The Karadžićs are a brotherhood from Drobnjaci, from Petnjica.

Šujo Karadžić was connected with Karađorđe that led the Drobnjaci in the capture and conquest of Belgrade from the Turkish occupiers in the First Serbian Uprising. The Vasojevići, another tribe from the Serbian land of Montenegro, also set out to conquer Belgrade with the Drobnjaci.[1]

In 1840, together with Novica Cerović and Mirko Aleksić, Karadžić organized the capture and execution of Smail Agha Čengić.[2]According to historical records, Smail Agha Čengić was killed by Mirko Aleksić, but according to folklore, Smail Agha was killed by Šujo Karadžić; but Mirko was faster, so he arrived earlier and cut off his head.[3]
