The untitled animated Barbie film is an upcoming planned animated film based on the eponymous fashion doll line created by Mattel. It will be the second theatrically released film based on the franchise following the 2023 live-action film and the first animated film in the Barbie series to be released in theaters as opposed to television, direct-to-video, or streaming.

[edit]After the release of Warner Bros. Pictures' 2023 live-action Barbie film, it was reported that the studio was looking to develop a sequel to the film following its critical and commercial success. Greta Gerwig, the director of the film, was said to have no plans to return for a sequel, but did not completely dismiss the idea.[1] When asked about both a sequel and a suggested Ken spin-off film, Barbie star Margot Robbie said, "I think we put everything into this one. We didn't build it to be a trilogy or something."[2]
On August 16, 2024, it was reported by Puck that Mattel was in negotiations with Illumination, the animated film division of Universal Pictures, to instead produce a theatrically released animated Barbie film.[3] Universal previously distributed several of the previous animated Barbie films through their home video division from 2006 to 2017, and also had involvement with a previous version of a live-action film. Mattel was stated to have said that they hope for Illumination to be able to use the film to replicate the success of their previous film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and further strengthen the Barbie brand. Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were said to not be involved with the film, and the two of them were stated to be "[not] thrilled" on Mattel's plans for the film.[4]
