Development

[edit]

In July 2024, during the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that a half-hour live-action Star Trek comedy series was being developed for Paramount+. The series was being developed by Tawny Newsome, Justin Simien, and Alex Kurtzman.[1] Kurtzman agreed to develop the series after the Newsome and Simien pitched it to him due to being impressed by Newsome's work as a writer on the series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.[2] Executive producers for the series include Newsome, Simien, Kurtzman, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.[3]

Writing

[edit]

Writing for the series had already started by November 2024.[4] The series was inspired by character/comedy-focused episodes from previous Star Trek series, particularly those in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999) and Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994), and aims for a more episodic storytelling in contrast to the more serialized nature of modern TV series, as Newsome and Simie favored an episodic format over a serialized one.[5]

Release

[edit]

The series is expected to be released on Paramount+.[1]
