The untitled Star Trek comedy series is an upcoming American comedy series developed by Alex Kurtzman, Tawny Newsome, and Justin Simien for the streaming service Paramount+. It is intended to be part of Kurtzman's Star Trek Universe. Set in the 25th century, the series follows a group of United Federation of Planets outsiders whose lives are broadcast. The series will be produced by CBS Studios alongside Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment
Kurtzman, Newsome, and Simien were developing the series by July 2024.
Synopsis
[edit]The series centers on a group of outsiders to the United Federation of Planets whose day-to-day lives are being recorded to "the entire quadrant".[1]
Production
[edit]Development
[edit]In July 2024, during the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that a half-hour live-action Star Trek comedy series was being developed for Paramount+. The series was being developed by Tawny Newsome, Justin Simien, and Alex Kurtzman.[1] Kurtzman agreed to develop the series after the Newsome and Simien pitched it to him due to being impressed by Newsome's work as a writer on the series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.[2] Executive producers for the series include Newsome, Simien, Kurtzman, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.[3]
Writing
[edit]Writing for the series had already started by November 2024.[4] The series was inspired by character/comedy-focused episodes from previous Star Trek series, particularly those in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999) and Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994), and aims for a more episodic storytelling in contrast to the more serialized nature of modern TV series, as Newsome and Simie favored an episodic format over a serialized one.[5]
Release
[edit]The series is expected to be released on Paramount+.[1]
