University Hospitals, often abbreviated as UH, is a large not-for-profit academic medical system primarily serving Northeast Ohio, especially the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The system's flagship campus is University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, located in Cleveland's University Circle district. UH is an affiliate hospital of Case Western Reserve University and Northeast Ohio Medical University.[1][2]

History

[edit]

In May 1866, the Cleveland City Hospital Association formed to provide charity care for indigent patients. After several smaller facilities, the Association built its first hospital at the intersection of East 9th Street and Lakeside Avenue in downtown Cleveland in 1876. This hospital, named Lakeside Hospital, affiliated with Western Reserve University in 1895. In 1925, Lakeside Hospital merged with Maternity Hospital and Babies and Children's Hospital merged under the name University Hospitals.[3][4]

The main campus of the University Hospitals system is UH Cleveland Medical Center in the University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland, neighboring both Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Clinic to the west. In addition to the main campus, UH provides hospital services at 11 regional locations throughout Northeast Ohio.
