Draft:United States Earth Science Organization

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The United States Earth Science Organization (USESO) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that runs a series of Earth science programs for high school students, including a program to select the US Earth Science Team for the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO)[1][2][3]. USESO is dedicated to incentivizing “ambitious, purpose-driven students to work on era-defining challenges that intersect Earth, technology, and society.”[4]

USESO offers two primary programs.

  1. Training Camp to select the US Earth Science Team for the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO)[5].
  2. Leadership in Earth & Environmental Sciences (LEES) Program focused on the environmental humanities.[6]

US Earth Science Team Selection

[edit]

The US Earth Science Team selection process begins with the administration of the National Open Exam. Following the exam, 40 students are chosen to attend Training Camp[7] held at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma[8]. A series of written examinations, as well as research-based projects reflecting activities at IESO, are used to further distinguish students[5].

National Open Exam

[edit]

The two-hour National Open Exam is administered in early March and consists of two sections focusing on a student’s conceptual understanding of the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and Solar System astronomy[9][10].

  1. The first section consists of 30 multiple-choice questions, with each question worth two points. There is no penalty for guessing[9].
  2. The second section consists of 4 free-response problems, each centering on a particular “sphere” of Earth science. The free-response section requires a combination of written explanations and calculations. A maximum of 15 points can be earned per problem for a total of 60 points.[9]

Training Camp

[edit]

Based on results from the National Open Exam, 40 students are invited to a one-week Training Camp held at the University of Tulsa in early June. These students, designated National Finalists, attend lectures given by distinguished guest speakers, conduct field work, and visit notable Earth science related locations such as the National Weather Center[11].

Additionally, students complete several assessments during their time at camp. These typically include[9][11]:

  • Theoretical exams similar in style to the National Open Exam but lengthier and more challenging;
  • A practical exam requiring students to identify and answer questions about various rocks and minerals;
  • An Earth Systems Project (ESP) focused on researching solutions to a specific Earth science-related problem;
  • A Team Field Investigation (TFI) requiring students to explore and explain an observation made at camp.

The US Earth Science Team is selected based on the assessments above and announced at the conclusion of camp, with significant weight given to the theoretical exams. Four students are selected for the main team and up to four students are selected for the guest team (members of which cannot earn individual medals, but can partake in team activities). Due to eligibility constraints imposed by IESO, students may only be selected to compete at IESO once.[12]

LEES Program

[edit]

The Leadership in Earth and Environmental Sciences (LEES) Program is a policy-focused, week-long camp held online as of 2024.

Admission to LEES typically begins in April and is based on essays assessing “the unique perspective and specific areas of interest that each applicant can bring to the program.” In addition to analyzing environmental issues from the perspective of various stakeholders, LEES Scholars engage in presentations, guest lectures, and group discussions.[6]

IESO Qualifiers[13]

[edit]

From 2021-2023, IESO did not differentiate between main and guest teams, allowing countries to designate up to 8 participants as part of their main teams.
