Type One Energy Group Inc. is an American fusion power company with the goal to commercialize a fusion power plant based on the stellarator concept first developed in the 1950s by Lyman Spitzer. The company is headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, with additional locations in Madison, Boston, and Vancouver BC.[1]
History
[edit]In 2019 Type One was founded by Randall Volberg, David Anderson, John Canik, Paul Harris, and Chris Hegna.[2]
In 2019, Type One was awarded an $2,472,145 ARPA-E grant for a project titled “Demonstration High Temperature Superconducting Non-Planar Stellarator Magnet with Advanced Manufactured Assemblies,” led by Prof. David Anderson and in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, University of Wisconsin, Commonwealth Fusion Systems, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The project sought to apply "advanced manufacturing (AM) to enable the complex shapes to be built accurately, rapidly, and economically; and high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets to reduce the size and weight of the reactor."[3]
In 2020, Type One was awarded a $500,000 US Dept of Energy INFUSE grant for an R&D project titled "Characterization and Qualification of JK2LB Alloy for Additive Manufacturing of Fusion Components," led by Randall Volberg and in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laborator and University of Wisconsin. In 2022, Type One was awarded an INFUSE grant for an R&D project titled "High-temperature superconducting CORC® conductors for stellarator magnet applications," led by Paul Harris and in collaboration with Lawrence Berkely National Laboratory.[5]
In 2023, Type One was one of eight fusion energy companies awarded funding and participation in the Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program established by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the US Department of Energy (DOE). Structured as a private-public partnership, the program aims "to develop fusion technologies to be commercially deployable in the next ten years."[6]
In 2023, Type One secured $29 million in seed funding from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, TDK Ventures, Doral Energy Tech Ventures, Darco, Grantham Foundation, MILFAM, Orbia Ventures, Shorewind Capital, TRIREC, VAHOCA and others, with Chris Mowry appointed as the new CEO.[7]
In 2024, Type One secured $53.5 million in further seed extension funding led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, with Foxglove Ventures and GD1 participating.[8]
In 2024, Type One was awarded an INFUSE grant for an R&D project titled "High Temperature Superconducting Cable Testing and Optimization for Stellarator Fusion Applications" led by Zachary Johnson and in collaboration with the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Florida State University.[9]
In 2024, Type One established a memorandum of understanding with the Tennessee Valley Authority and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to build Infinity One - its stellarator fusion prototype machine - at the retired Bull Run Fossil Plant in Clinton, Tennessee.[10]
