Turkish Linux Users Association or in Turkish Linux Kullanıcıları Derneği (LKD for short), is a non-governmental organization in Turkey formed by people who are devoted to Linux and free software, aiming to act jointly by sharing knowledge and experience.[3]
History
[edit]The Linux community in Turkey started to take shape for the first time in 1992, similar to the world. The first organizational work started in 1993 with the establishment of a Linux list on the e-mail lists of Bilkent University and the community started to emerge.
In 1995, the 1st Internet in Turkey Conference[4] was the first physical gathering of this community, and it was at this event that the foundation was laid for the first organization to share knowledge and experience under the name Turkish Linux Users Group. Between 1997 and 2000, with the growing interest in Linux and the efforts of this working group, Linux-related trainings and events were organized in different events, further growing the community.
As a result of these efforts, in May 2000, the Linux Users Group became a legal entity and was renamed the Linux Users Association and began organizing its activities and sharing under its own domain name and name. Since 2000, the association has been organizing both physical and online events in line with the purpose of the association.[1]
In 2002, the association organized the first Linux and Free Software Festival, which later became traditional.[5] This event continued to be organized under the name Free Software and Linux Days.[6][7] In 2004, Linux Planet (Linux Gezegen) was launched, bringing together the blog world of that period. In 2006, the idea of organizing a “Linux Camp” was put forward for the first time and in 2009, the 1st Linux Summer Camp was organized.[8] Later, the name of the camp was changed to Mustafa Akgül Free Software Summer Camp in memory of Mustafa Akgül, the founder of LKD.[9] In 2022, the camp was organized for the 11th time on the campus of Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University.
In the following years, the association has organized numerous events, trainings and training camps both by its own efforts and in cooperation with different non-governmental organizations,[10][11] and continues to provide information about Linux and free software to people and institutions at different levels of knowledge.[12]
Training Camps
[edit]The Association organizes two Boot Camps every year to promote free software in Turkey:[13]
- Mustafa Akgül Free Software Summer Camp
- Mustafa Akgül Free Software Winter Camp
