Tsehwang Tandin is a Bhutanese Educator and the current president of Royal Thimphu College under Royal University of Bhutan . With over 40 years of service in Education in Bhutan, Tshewang has served in various capacities starting as a teacher, becoming a principal , serving as a director in the Ministry of Education and holding the post of President and Director in 3 Higher Educational Institute. Tshewang is the recipient of Bura Karp Kabney with Patang during the 117th National Day of Bhutan.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Tshewang Tandin was born in Khangku, Paro where he originally hails from and was educated. He went on to attend Sherubtse College for his high school, after which he received an Honours Degree in Zoology from St.Anthonys College in Shillong in 1981. He eventually went on to earn a Masters in Science majoring in Zoology from St. John's College, Agra , India in 1981. [3]
He went onto pursue a Post graduate in Education from the PGCE Institute of Education London in UK in 1985 and finally earning his masters from the University of New England (Australia)

Career

[edit]With over 40 years of dedicated service to the nation, Tshewang started his career as a teacher in Sarpang HighSchool rising to the post of vice Principal by 1987. He went onto serve as a Vice Prinicpal and Principal for Paro High school from 1987 to 1990; after which served as Principal of Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School for 8 years until 1998. Following a two year period Tsheang was a Liaison Officer and Coordination officer under the erstwhile Department of Education under the Royal Government of Bhutan. From 1999 to 2001 Tshewang Tandin went back to his Alma mater, Sherubtse College, this time as a Principal. Tshewang returned to the Ministry of Education to take charge in administrative roles, serving initially as a joint director then as Director of School Education and finally as the Director of Department of Adult and Higher Education. From 2016 to 2018, Tshewang became the Director General of Royal Institute of Management the highest place of learning institute.[6]. Tshewang retired from the civil service after 38 years. he joined the Royal Thimphu College after his initial retirement as it's president where he still serves. [5]
Personal Life
[edit]Tshewang is an avid hiker and fitness enthusiast leading his colleagues on weekend hikes. In October 2024, Tshewang was the oldest runner in the Laya Run, a 25 km marathon held at an altitude of 3820 meters. Tshewang's finishing time was 4 hours and 38 minutes finishing much ahead of much younger runners and inspiring everyone. [7]
Honours and Awards
[edit]Tshewang Tandin is the recipient of the 2023 UNE Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of his achievements and leadership in promoting inclusive education and fostering positive organisational culture in Bhutan. [8]
Tshewang received the Bura Karp Kabney without fringes and Patang(Sword) from His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck during the the 117th National Day of Bhutan, 2024 bestowing upon him a lifelong honour for his contribution in the field of education to his country.[9]
