Troy Cross is an American professor, philosopher, and Bitcoin activist. Cross earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Rutgers University in 2004.[1] After working at Yale University as an assistant professor and Merton College, University of Oxford, as a lecturer, he began teaching at Reed College in 2010, where he is a professor of philosophy and humanities. Cross has a notable X following, formerly known as Twitter, where he primarily discusses issues related to Bitcoin.
Cross frequently writes articles about Bitcoin, including for publications centered around cryptocurrency like CoinDesk, including an article about the environmental impacts of cryptocurrency.[2] Although there are concerns about the negative impacts of cryptocurrency mining on the environment, he argues that cryptocurrency has the potential to better the environment. He opposes arguments held by organizations such as Greenpeace USA, a prominent climate change activism organization. Cross also speaks on various podcasts as a guest, including Bitcoin Magazine's podcast[3] and PhiloCast[4], sharing his views on the environmental potential of Bitcoin.[5][6]
Cross is the cofounder of the Nakamoto Project, which aims to "help spread the word about the powerful potential of Bitcoin."[7] In 2021, Cross joined the Bitcoin Policy Institute as a Fellow, another advocacy organization intended to "better our understanding of Bitcoin and our monetary networks."[8][9] He also holds advisory positions at Blockfusion USA, Sazmining, Optimize Infrastructure, and New Layer Capital, among others. He is listed on the Bitcoin Magazine website as an author.[10]
