The film was announced in July 2018 with Mark Burton originally set to adapt the book. August was hired to write the screenplay in January 2020 and Timbers was hired to direct in October.
Plot

Production
[edit]In July 2018, Warner Animation Group, now called Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, announced that it would produce an animated film about Toto, based on the 2017 children's book Toto: The Dog-Gone Amazing Story of The Wizard of Oz by Michael Morpurgo, with Mark Burton adapting the book.[2] By January 2020, John August was hired to write the screenplay and Jared Stern was set to serve as a producer through his A Stern Talking To banner.[1] In October 2020, Alex Timbers was hired to direct.[3] In February 2021, Derek Frey was announced to have replaced Stern as a producer with animation set to begin in late 2021 at the Animal Logic studio in Vancouver, Canada.[4][5]
Release
[edit]Toto was originally scheduled to be theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures on February 2, 2024.[6] In April 2023, it was taken off the release schedule with Alto Knights taking over its original release date,[7] which also moved off that date by October 2023.[8]
