Tom Ammermann (born May 9, 1966) is a German music producer and audio technician specializing in immersive audio, surround sound technology, and audio software development.[1] His career encompasses several decades, during which he has contributed to advancements in music production and audio technology and influenced audio production practices.

Early Life and Career

[edit]

Ammermann began his musical career in the 1980s as a member of various bands in Hamburg, gaining early experience in music production. In 1995, Ammermann co-founded Luna Studio in Hamburg[2], focusing on audio production and collaborating with local musicians. This period marked the beginning of his focus on surround audio.

Innovations in Surround Audio

[edit]

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ammermann developed the first surround mixes for headphones, launching the brand Headphone Surround 3D. This work established him as a figure in immersive audio production and software development. In 2008, he worked on the "forsenses" Blu-ray project for Sony Music Entertainment Japan, utilizing 3D audio effect spatial audio production to enhance the listening experience.[3]

Founding of New Audio Technology and Further Work

[edit]

Ammermann continued to invent and develop audio software for 3D/immersive audio entertainment. In 2011, his "Spatial Audio Designer" software was employed by Lucasfilm for the Auro-3D mix of the film Red Tails, considered the first immersive audio movie. This led to the founding of New Audio Technology in 2012. The company introduced products such as the "Spatial Sound Card" and the "Spatial Audio Game Engine", contributing to spatial audio production in gaming and film.[4] At New Audio Technology, Ammermann continues to develop immersive audio software for applications beyond music and cinema such as planetariums and live installations like the Sphere (venue) in Las Vegas.[5]

Appearance at Workshops and Conferences

[edit]

Ammermann conducts workshops and presentations at international audio conferences, including the Audio Engineering Society's conventions[6][7][8] and International Conferences on Spatial Audio (ICSA), the biennial Tonmeistertagung [9][10], and SAE Institute alumni events.
