The Tokyo Type Directors Club (Tokyo TDC) is an organisation based in Tokyo, Japan, dedicated to the typographic and graphic arts. It holds the annual “Tokyo TDC Awards” an international design competition, and the associated “TDC Exhibition,” which showcases winners of this competition, as well publishing a related annual book.

In August 2006, the Tokyo TDC was granted Non-Profit making Organization (NPO) status by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

History of the Tokyo TDC

The founding of the Tokyo TDC coincided with its exhibition, 17th of December, 1987. The exhibition featured a large-scale painting by Noriyuki Tanaka and Katsuya Ise, containing poems by Shuntaro Tanigawa and Takashi Tsujii. The first Tokyo TDC symposium, included talks “Art and Typodirection” by Houmei Tono, Katsuhiko Hibino and Katsumi Asaba, and “Tracking the Typography Movement” by Yoshio Hayakawa, Ryuichi Yamashiro and Ryoichi Enomoto. The poster design was by Katsumi Asaba.
