- Comment: A source verifying that Slocum is an emeritus professor would be helpful. Best, Reading Beans, Duke of Rivia 20:18, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
Timothy A. Slocum is professor emeritus of special education and rehabilitation counseling at Utah State University. He researches evidence-based reading instructional methods for teaching children and adults and examines issues related to measurement validity.
Career
[edit]Slocum earned his BA in community studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz and his M.Ed. in special education and PhD in education at University of Washington. He joined the faculty of Utah State University in 1991.[1]
At USU, Slocum has primarily studied reading disabilities and effective interventions for improving literacy, including the use of Direct Instruction and phonological awareness skill-building procedures.[2] He has evaluated variables that affect the success of programs, such as No Child Left Behind and assessments that demonstrate educational outcomes.[3][4] He also has written extensively about research methodologies that are commonplace in education and whether those methods prove the effectiveness for an intervention.[5][6] Slocum has received significant funding from the U.S. Department of Education for studying evidence-based literacy practices.[7]
He served as co-editor of the Journal of Direct Instruction and on the editorial boards of the Journal of Positive Behavior Supports, Education and Treatment of Children, and The Behavior Analyst.
