This is a timeline of the major events leading upto, during, and following, the 2000 United States presidential election.
1996
[edit]- November 5: Bill Clinton wins the 1996 United States presidential election, defeating Republican Bob Dole, and is reelected for a second term.[1]
1997
[edit]- January 20: Bill Clinton and Al Gore are inaugurated for a second time as the President and the Vice President of the United States, respectively.[2]
1998
[edit]- January 27: BBC speculates on a Gore presidency amidst the Clinton–Lewinsky scandal.[3]
1999
[edit]- March 9: During an interview with CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, Gore stated, "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the internet."[4] Following the interview, a widely spread urban legend that Gore claimed to have invented the internet, began.[5]
- June 12: George W. Bush, the Governor of Texas and the eldest son of former president George H. W. Bush, declares his interest in running for president, and officially enters the Republican primary race.[6]
- June 16: Gore launches his presidential campaign, entering the Democratic primary race.[7][8]
2000
