The Wandering Inn is a 2016 fantasy series by the anonymous author "Pirateaba" (pseudonym). Originally released as a self-published serialized web fiction hosted on the author's blog,[1] the series and its spin-off have later been published across multiple adaptations and mediums. The Wandering Inn features Erin Solstice, a woman from Earth who finds herself transported into a dangerous and game-like fantasy world.

Within the genre, the series is known for its robust length - as of October 2022, the web serial hosts a word count of over 10 million words,[2] equivalent to ten times the length of the entire Harry Potter book series.

Publication

[edit]

The Wandering Inn originally began publication as an online serial, most often with a release of two chapters a week. The serial was published on RoyalRoad,[3] a serial hosting company, as well as on the authors' blog. The series grew its fan base primarily via word of mouth, as well as via social media such as Reddit.[4] The publication schedule of the serial has varied over the course of its publication, as the author experimented with different schedules and incentives for paying fans. Changing hours of publication, special chapters for donation milestones, scheduling monthly breaks, and fan-interaction with Patreon polls choosing the focus of a chapter, are a few such examples.

In August 2018, the author self-published an Ebook adaptation. This release did not affect the availability of the serial, as the author wished to keep it available for all.

In December 2019, the first audiobook adaptation was published by PodiumAudio.[5]

In August 2021, the author hosted a fundraiser to support the creation of a comic set in the universe of The Wandering Inn.[6] The Kickstarter raked in more than 300% of its original target, enabling its release in multiple formats: digital, paperback, and hardcover.

As of October 2022, there are seven self-published ebooks and published audiobooks available.

Web Serial

[edit]

The web serial is the original medium The Wandering Inn was published in, and continues to be the medium the majority of fans read the serial in. Originally, the serial was published both on Pirateaba's WordPress blog and on the creative writing site "royalroad.com." Pirateaba removed The Wandering Inn from RoyalRoad in 2021.

For the most part, the web serial consists of bi-weekly updates, with the first update of the month focusing on a side-story, with occasional deviations.

Ebooks

[edit]

The Ebook adaptation of the series is available only on Amazon. The books do not correspond directly to the web serial's volumes - the longer volumes of the serial have been split into multiple ebooks to allow for easier audiobook adaptation.

"The Last Tide" Comic book & Kickstarter

[edit]

Originally published as a digital comic, "The Last Tide" is a Comic book side-story published by Cloudscape Comics in digital, paperback, and hardcover formats.

In August 2021, Cloudscape Comics released a Kickstarter fundraiser to continue the series. The fundraiser was a success, having raised a total of 85,530 CA (roughly 67,500 USD at the time), more than 300% of the originally expected goal of 26,000 CA (roughly 20,500 USD at the time).[6] The fundraiser aimed to release a continuation to the first installment of The Last Tide, in multiple formats: digital, paperback and hardcover.

Merchandise

[edit]

A store for merchandise of the series was released to the public in July 2022.[14] A notable item from the store is a cast iron skillet with the name of the series on the bottom.
