The Traitors (also known as The Traitors NZ outside of New Zealand) is a New Zealand reality television series broadcast on Three and ThreeNow. It is based on the Dutch series De Verraders and, for each of its two seasons, is hosted by New Zealand TV personality and broadcaster, Paul Henry.[1][2]
The first season premiered in August of 2023. It is now available on Peacock and BBC iPlayer.[3]
The series was subsequently renewed for a second season, which premiered in July of 2024.[4][2]
Format
[edit]In the reality competition The Traitors, a number of players converge at a location in the outback of New Zealand. Among them, a group known as “The Traitors” is discreetly chosen by host Paul Henry on the first day. Their primary objective is to eliminate the “Faithful” contestants and secure a prize fund valued at up to $100,000.[4]
Each night, the Traitors clandestinely deliberate and select a Faithful contestant to “murder.” The next morning, the remaining Faithful contestants discover the eliminated player’s absence during breakfast. The group then engages in various missions to accumulate funds for the prize pool.
Players are sometimes able to compete for a Shield. Holding a Shield provides immunity from murder but not from the Banishment Vote. At the end of each day, players convene at a Round Table, discussing whom to vote out. Privately, they cast their votes, and the player with the most votes faces banishment, revealing their affiliation.
If the Traitors dwindle to two, they are able to recruit a Faithful member, who may accept or decline. The game culminates in a final Round Table vote. Unanimous agreement ends the game, and players reveal their affiliations. If all Traitors are eliminated, the Faithful contestants share the prize; otherwise, the Traitors claim victory.
