The Night Riders is Matt Furie's 2012 debut publication [1], featuring an eclectic children's' picture book with rich detailed hyper-coloured illustrations.
Author
[edit]Matt Furie is most renowned for his character 'Pepe the Frog' which has been adopted into a number of internet subcultures and known universally as a popular meme and cultural icon. Matt Furie is the subject of the documentary 'Feels Good Man' by Arthur Jones, which is about how his gentle character, Pepe the Frog, was co-opted. Winner of the Visual Artist in the San Francisco Bay Guardian's 20th annual Goldie awards, he's exhibited in the U.S. and Europe. Furie is also an accomplished illustrator; in addition to The Night Riders, he is known for his comic book series Boy's Club. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter.
Synopsis
[edit]The book follows the adventures of a nocturnal frog and rat awake at midnight and their epic dirtbike adventure toward the sunrise. Together they befriend a bat-like creature and a dragon and make their way from forest to bat cave to ghost town to ocean to shore and beyond [2].
Albeit being a picture book, the names of the characters are disclosed in the end notes where Matt Furie acknowledges the memory of Wat, and thanks 'Aiyana, Fox, Mystery, Toki and Hoodrat'. Aiyana Udesen, is Furie's wife and an independent artist herself, having graduated with a Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003.[1] Wat and Fox have been identified as Furie's beloved pet rats from a 2010 Interview.
The dedication order mirrors the order in which the characters appear in the book: “Wat, Mystery, Toki, and Hoodrat.” This sequence directly aligns with the four main characters, suggesting the association of Wat as the rat and Mystery as the frog. These protagonists continue their adventure and then befriend Toki, the dragon and the bat-like creature, Hoodrat.
