Overview

The Lifelong Learner Hall of Fame honors individuals and organizations who, by serving as role models, opening doors for others, and helping to enrich the quality of life in Iowa and its communities have had a significant and long-lasting impact on lifelong learning in the state. The program is sponsored by the Wallace and Beverly Winkie Foundation.

History

The Lifelong Learner Hall of Fame was launched in 2017. For the first two years of the program, AARP Iowa was a sponsor. Each year’s class consists of two – four inductees, who can be any age, can be living or deceased, and can be current or former residents of Iowa. Anyone in Iowa can nominate others for the Hall of Fame. Past inductees have included people with a wide variety of professional and avocational interests and accomplishments. Past and present selection committees for the inductees have included Iowa Representative Ruth Ann Gaines, Kelli McCarthy of UNI, Mary Muehl from AARP Iowa, author Jerry Harrington, opera star Simon Estes, and Olympic coach Dan Gable.
